Extend on the skill and knowledge from the PADI Open Water Course by taking the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course.
Explore new areas of diving that spark your interest whilst under the watchful eye of a PADI instructor and learn more about our underwater world and how to protect it.
With less theory than other entry level courses, this course is practical, adventurous and fun.
On completion of the course, not only will you have experienced different aspects of diving, your certification depth limit increases from 18 meters to 30 meters.
There are 5 dives in total with 2 being Mandatory dives Deep and Navigation.
Mandatory Dives
- Deep Diver – on this dive you will learn about the physiological effects and challengers that are faced when diving deeper.
- Underwater Navigator – this dive will fine-tune your compass skills, as well as using natural landmarks, time and distance measuring tools readily available to us when diving such as kick cycles or air usage

PADI Advanced open water Diver Course Prerequisites
- Be at least 12 years of age.
- Be a qualified PADI Open Water diver, or equivalent from an approved training body.
- Be able to swim and in good physical health.
- Accompanied to dive sites by a parent or guardian if under the age of 18.

What are the prerequisites for the Advanced Open Water Diver course?
- You need to be a PADI Open Water Diver (or hold a qualifying certification from another training organization).
- The minimum age is 15 years old (12 years old for the Junior Advanced Open Water Diver certification).
- You’ll need to complete a Medical questionnaire.
How long does the Advanced Open Water Diver course take?
- It involves some independent home study using the PADI eLearning materials (approximately 6-8 hours).
- The practical part of the course consists of 5 dives which are done over 2 days.
What is the maximum depth I'm certified to dive to after completing the Advanced Open Water Diver course?
- Upon successful completion, you will be certified to dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters (100 feet).
- For Junior Advanced Open Water Divers (12-14 years old), the maximum depth is 21 meters (70 feet).
Do I have to take an exam for the Advanced Open Water Diver course?
- No, there is no formal written exam for the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course.
- The focus is on gaining practical experience and developing your skills through the five open water dives.
- You will complete knowledge reviews for each Adventure Dive via the PADI eLearning.
What will I learn during the Advanced Open Water Diver course?
The course includes two mandatory Adventure Dives:
- Deep Dive: You’ll learn about the physiological effects of deeper diving, how to plan deep dives, and safety procedures.
- Underwater Navigation Dive: You’ll refine your compass navigation skills and learn to use natural navigation techniques.
You will also complete three elective Adventure Dives, such as:
- Peak Performance Buoyancy

What equipment do I need for the Advanced Open Water Diver course?
All equipment for the course will be provided:
Mask, snorkel, fins, BCD, regulator, wetsuit, boots, gloves, hood, dive computer or depth gauge and timer, weight system, compass.
Depending on the Adventure Dives, you might need specialized equipment (e.g., a dive light for night diving, a lift bag for search and recovery). Any additional gear needed will be provided during the course at no extra cost.

Where will the dives for my PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course take place?
For the PADI Advanced Diver course we use various inland dive sites or if weather and conditions permit, we use coastal sites down West Wales.
